Privacy policy for Japan Explorer

This Privacy policy describes how Japan Explorer ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and handles your information when you use our application.

1. Information we collect

We collect the following information to provide our service:

• Email address - for account creation and authentication
• Visited locations data - to save your travel progress
• Authentication tokens - to keep you signed in
• Application preferences - to remember your settings

For guests, this data is stored locally in your browser using browser storage technologies.

Analytics data (with your consent)

If you choose to enable analytics, we collect anonymous usage data to improve the app:

• Feature usage patterns - which features you use most
• Navigation patterns - how you move through the app
• Technical information - browser type, device type, errors
• Session information - anonymous session identifiers

Important: Analytics data is completely anonymous and cannot be linked to your personal information.

2. Local storage and essential technologies

We use browser storage technologies only for essential functionality:

• Local Storage - Used only for essential functions: storing your visited locations data (for guests), authentication state, and application settings
• Session Storage - Used temporarily to manage your current session
• Service Worker Cache - Used to enable offline functionality and improve performance

Essential Use Only: All browser storage is used exclusively for essential functionality required to provide the service you requested. No personal data is stored for non-essential purposes.

We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party cookies.

3. How we use your information

Your email is used for account management and authentication. Your travel data is used to display your progress and sync across devices when signed in.

4. Third-party services and data transfer

We use Supabase for our database and authentication services. Your personal data is processed and stored on servers located in Tokyo, Japan. This transfer is covered by the European Commission's adequacy decision for Japan, which ensures your data is protected under standards equivalent to GDPR. We have a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) in place with Supabase.

5. Your rights and data control (GDPR)

You have full control over your personal data under GDPR and other privacy laws:

• Right to access - View all personal data we hold about you
• Right to rectification - Correct any inaccurate personal data
• Right to erasure (right to be forgotten) - Permanently delete your account and all associated data using the "Delete Account" button
• Right to data portability - Request a copy of your personal data in a portable format
• Right to object - Object to processing of your personal data

Local Data Control: You can clear all locally stored data by clearing your browser's storage or uninstalling the application.

6. Legal basis for processing

Our legal bases for processing your personal data are:

• Legitimate interest - For providing core application functionality
• Contract performance - For account management and service delivery
• Essential functionality - Browser storage is used only for essential technical functions required to deliver the service

7. Data retention

Server Data: Unconfirmed accounts are automatically deleted after 24 hours. Confirmed accounts are retained until you delete them.

Local Data: Essential browser storage data (guest visit data, authentication state, settings) is stored only on your device until you clear them or uninstall the application.
